Celebrating transition and harvest with Fall Equinox herbs
Our long summer nights are fading into cool autumn evenings as the equinox quickly approaches. The equinox gives balance to our world as Earth begins to slumber. On this day the wild freedom of summer and the pensive reflection of winter coverge together, inviting transition and transformation. Celebrating Fall Equinox, called Mabon by many, means enjoying the bountiful harvest and making preparations for winter’s coming rest. Fall Equinox herbs and rituals and guide you on this important day.
The fall equinox is a cause for celebration of gratitude in bounty both for summer’s growth and for family and friends. It’s so special to get together with loved ones on this day and celebrate together using Fall Equinox herbs and florals to infuse the celebration with some special magic.
Herbal-infused dinner
Many celebratory days call for delicious meals with friends and family. I love to incorporate some of my favorite herbs into my equinox meals to invite my friends and family into my herbal practice. These dinners are spiritual events and give me a chance to share herbal wisdom with people I love.
Cooking autumnal foods like root vegetables or squash will warm tummies and help transition from summer to fall. When cooking your preferred veggies, add in some of your favorite warming and clarity-bringing herbs. I love using rosemary and sage from the garden in my cooking around this time. Both herbs have long histories of bringing clarity, which aids in navigating transitional times of year. They’re also super yummy with oven-roasted vegetables. I prefer using fresh herbs when I can, but if you are unable to procure fresh rosemary or sage, check the spice aisle of your local grocery store.
Warming drinks and dessert
Nothing is better on a brisk fall day than a mug of something warm. Equinox means inviting in the flavors and scents of fall, like cinnamon and apple mixed with rosehips. They fit together so perfectly for a fall equinox celebration and rose hips give a boost of vitamin C for immunity as we move into the cold season.
Not only is cinnamon delicious, it also invokes protection. Using it on the equinox prepares you for what’s to come in the winter. Apples represents the cycle of life, from birth to death, and the spirit of renewal. The time around fall equinox are apples’ bountiful season, inviting us to partake in their magic and gain wisdom and understanding of our earth’s many cycles. I love pairing apples with cinnamon because the combination of protection and wisdom is so powerful when navigating the darker days of the year.
Cinnamon-Apple Tea
Soak in the fall weather and stay warm with a from-scratch cinnamon apple tea. This tea is so easy and delicious; perfect for an equinox get together. I like to make it in a pot on my stove, letting all the flavors soak in and the aroma float throughout my home. When it’s time to drink, I just ladle it in!
Baked Apples with Cinnamon
I’ve been eating baked apples with cinnamon since I was a little girl. This was one of my grandma’s favorite fall treats to serve to our family and friends. Now, I love making it for my loved ones while being intentional about infusing fall equinox herbal magic.
First, you’ll need to preheat the oven to 350 F and then begin coring the apples. I find it easiest to the the apples with a knife. In a separate bowl mix together brown sugar and cinnamon. Mix in chopped butter. Then, fill the apples with this mixture and place in the oven until the apples are soft. Adding water to the pan before baking prevents the apples from drying out when cooking.
End the evening with intention
At the end of the night, light a few candles and grab your journal. Maybe gather your leftover herbs to make a stovetop potpourri. Open your heart to the magic of the herbs and set your intentions for this next cycle as the days approach Winter Solstice.
